The news: reviewing complex documents beyond papers
On October 14, 2026, Google Research publicly launched Deep Review for feedback on complex documents. Initial inputs are PDF and plain text; multi-file input is still planned. Each user receives two free document reviews per week. Official announcement
The benefit: ask what supports the conclusion
Authors of technical proposals know their subject well and can leave out assumptions unfamiliar to other readers. One useful role for review is to bring those missing explanations back to the author's attention.
For example, a backup plan might say “Back up once a day” while promising “At most ten minutes of data loss after a failure.” Make those two statements your own check before reading the feedback. If the ten-minute target is necessary, the author needs to add the actual protection mechanism; if it cannot be met, the promise needs correcting. This is a teaching scenario, not a tested Deep Review result.
Organize comments into a table with the passage, issue, evidence and decision. When feedback rests on a mistaken assumption, record why you rejected it instead of repeatedly changing the document to eliminate every suggestion.
How to use it: prepare a small, self-contained draft
- Find Deep Review on the Google Research tools page and follow its official entry link. Prepare a PDF or plain-text document with enough context to stand alone, such as a short proposal containing its goals, current setup and recovery requirements.
- Submit it according to the portal's instructions. Initial support does not include multiple files, so put necessary tables and definitions in one readable document. Make sure you have permission to provide the material. Google says uploads are not used to train models, but are stored for one year for display in the interface. Input and storage policy
- Compare each comment with the original text. In the backup example, start with time units and conditions, then ask the system owner to confirm the actual capability. Record accepted, rejected and unresolved comments in your revision table, and reread the entire proposal afterward.
The official material supplies an entry point and input conditions, but does not list detailed client button names. This guide assumes no fixed completion time. Review feedback also cannot replace verification of how the actual system behaves.
